Dr. Farrah and staff support National Orthodontic Health Month!

Happy Monday! October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and our staff at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics wanted to remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this Halloween season. Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Check out these delicious braces-friendly recipes, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at 512-258-6979, ask us on Facebook or ask Dr. Farrah Agahi during your next visit at our convenient Austin office!

Dr. Farrah wants to know: Are you wearing your mouth guard?

Happy Monday! With fall sports under way for a lot of Dr. Farrah Agahi's patients, we thought today would be a good time to once again remind our young athletes in braces to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports this fall.

Our staff at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics will always tell you that you should ALWAYS wear a mouth guard when playing sports, but especially during fall months. Why? September marks the beginning of fall sports such as football, soccer and basketball, which are known to dangerous sports if you're not wearing a mouth guard.

After all, more than half of the seven million sports and recreation-related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth between ages 5 and 24. Sixty-seven percent of parents say their child does not wear a mouth guard, yet 70 percent say their biggest fear when their child plays is that they will get hurt. Despite the risks, many kids are still not wearing mouth guards and facial protection during games and practices.

Dr. Farrah and our entire staff encourage you to head over to the American Association of Orthodontists' website for a quick primer on the importance of mouth guards and protecting your mouth.

We hope this helps you remember to always wear a mouth guard and other forms of protective gear when participating in fall sports! We encourage you to give us a call at 512-258-6979 if you have any questions! Have a great rest of the week!

Ask Dr. Farrah: Which foods should I avoid during orthodontic treatment?

Great question. There are a variety of foods Dr. Farrah Agahi wants you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should avoid include:
• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
• Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give us a call at 512-258-6979 or ask one of our staff members during your next visit at our convenient Austin office! We also definitely encourage you to check out this helpful article about eating with braces, courtesy of Parenthood.com.

Ask Dr. Farrah: Why the Damon System?

Dr. Farrah Agahi and our dedicated team are pleased to offer our patients The Damon® System at our convenient Austin office. Damon braces allow your teeth to move more comfortably and easily than traditional braces. Thanks to these innovative new braces, achieving your perfect smile will be faster and easier than you ever thought possible.

You're probably saying, "All right, Dr. Farrah. Give me the specifics on how Damon braces are an advantage."

Time-Saving

Damon's innovative technology of self-ligating braces saves you time in orthodontic treatment. The Damon system allows for fewer trips to our office, as well as faster movement of your teeth than with traditional braces. The light forces applied by Damon braces are "biologically compatible" meaning that they work with your body for gentler and quicker tooth movement.

Comfortable

Damon System braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows Dr. Farrah to use far lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions. That makes your treatment not only shorter, but it is also far more comfortable.

Because of its unique sliding door, the Damon bracket allows us to use high-tech, light-force wires to achieve tooth movement. This means less pressure on your teeth for more comfortable treatment. Not every orthodontist uses Damon self-ligating braces. The reason Dr. Farrah does is simple: it means your experience in uncovering your radiant new smile will be more comfortable and convenient than ever.

To learn more about the Damon System, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Farrah, please give us a call at 512-258-6979. We hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Ask Dr. Farrah: "What, exactly, is so cool about braces?"

The question should really be: What isn't fun about braces?

Dr. Farrah Agahi will always tell you that braces, are cool, hip and pretty fun nowadays. In fact, those were the findings of a nationwide survey this year of moms whose kids are going through or have recently had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as Invisalign, In-Ovation and iBraces, advanced computer software, color options and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Serena Williams and Dakota Fanning, to name a few—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s youth.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Has your child visited Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics for a consultation? If not, please give us a call at 512-634-8254 and let Dr. Farrah help your child begin the journey to a beautiful new smile this summer!

Tell Dr. Farrah and team what's on your summer reading list!

With summer 2010 in full swing, Dr. Farrah Agahi and our staff have been thinking more and more about how important reading is for kids to develop critical thinking skills and improving their vocabulary. We know that sometimes it can take a while to make that initial move of opening up a book, but once you do, you usually have trouble putting it down! Summer reading is a vital step in brain development - and it's fun!

Today, we want to ask you: What's on YOUR summer reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites? Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and we'll be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian here in Austin for some ideas or check out these summer reading ideas that we came across on Friday, courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Dr. Farrah Agahi, helping you save face this summer

Wouldn’t you believe it, summer 2010 is already two weeks old! At Smiles by Farrah, our team knows that the summer months bring with them an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of our athletes in treatment damaging their teeth. If you're playing sports this summer, it's important that you consult Austin orthodontist Dr. Farrah Agahi for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. Mouth guards, Dr. Farrah will tell you, are advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and many, many others.

In case of any accident involving the face this summer, we want you to check your mouth and appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances are damaged, please schedule an appointment to see Dr. Farrah immediately. And don’t forget to ask us—we will be happy to provide a mouth guard for any patient in treatment!

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call at 512-634-8254 if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with Dr. Farrah.

We hope you all have a GREAT rest of your Independence Day weekend! Get some sun and be careful with those fireworks!

Dr. Farrah wants to know: Do you suffer from sleep disorders?

Austin orthodontist Dr. Farrah Agahi knows sleep disorders are fairly common, with approximately 50 to 70 million Americans being affected by some type chronic sleep disorder. Some of these progress to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which can cause loss of sleep among many other health problems. Snoring is one of the most easily identified symptoms of sleep apnea, and as the condition worsens it can lead to airway blockage, which can severely disrupt your sleep patterns.

If you suffer from sleep apnea, each time your breathing stops, the resulting lack of oxygen alerts your brain, which temporarily wakes you up to restart proper breathing. Because the time spent awake is so brief, most people with sleep apnea don't remember it - and many think they are getting a good night's sleep. However, the constant wake-sleep-wake-sleep cycle precludes the deep sleep that refreshes the body, and sufferers are frequently drowsy during the day.

Treatments range widely and depend on the severity of the problem and the type of apnea. Basic treatment can be behavioral - for instance, patients are instructed to lose weight, stop smoking, or sleep on their sides instead of on their backs. Beyond that, oral devices can be used to position the mouth in such a way that prevents throat blockage. In more severe cases, surgery may be the best option.

The following symptoms can indicate the presence of sleep apnea. If you notice one or more of these, give us a call, and we can refer you to a sleep apnea specialist here in Austin.

* Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
* Loud snoring at night
* Waking up at night short of breath
* Snorting or choking sounds during the night (indicating a restart of breathing)
* Headaches upon waking in the morning
* Falling asleep unintentionally during the day
* Extreme drowsiness throughout the day

Enjoy the rest of Father's Day weekend everyone!

Talkin' retainers with Dr. Farrah Agahi

If you've recently completed your orthodontic treatment at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics, our entire team would like to congratulate you again! Now, after your braces have been removed, Austin orthodontist Dr. Farrah Agahi will provide—or has provided you by now—with retainers. After braces are officially removed, teeth may - and do - shift out of position if they are not stabilized.

Retainers, however, provide the stabilization needed, and are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until your bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Agahi is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for an entire lifetime.

If you have additional questions about retainers or your treatment here at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics, please give us a call at 512-634-8254.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! From Dr. Agahi

Did you know May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? At Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics, we know that kids living an active lifestyle can - and do - improve their health, productivity and overall well-being.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines for your reference. The guidelines call for children and teens to exercise for at least one hour each day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, dancing and jumping rope).

Dr. Farrah Agahi and staff always encourage our patients to stay fit by exercising or participating in sports. However, we also want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of facial protection when playing sports this spring and summer. To learn more about how often your child should exercise, we recommend you check out this series of helpful articles about kids and exercise, courtesy of our friends at KidsHealth.org.

Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend!

Ask Dr. Agahi: Who really benefits from Invisalign®?

Part of what make clear aligners such as Invisalign "work" is that the treatment is customized for pretty much anyone. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now - and digitize it. Then we look at the positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next, Dr. Agahi uses special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take during your treatment. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one will move your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. But the best thing about it all? Nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Dr. Farrah Agahi is a certified Invisalign provider in Austin. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call.

Dr. Agahi, helping eliminate your child's fears of the orthodontist

Dr. Farrah Agahi knows that many children have fear when it comes to visiting the dentist and orthodontist. Our staff at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics found a great article over the weekend on how to help children overcome those fears, courtesy of our friends at WebMD.

Making your child feel comfortable when they visit Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics is a priority of ours, and patients are always treated in a warm, caring and family-friendly environment. April is National Facial Protection Month! From Dr. Farrah Agahi

April—which happens to be National Facial Protection Month—is almost upon us, and Dr. Agahi wants you to stay safe on the field this spring. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year. And that’s precisely why our team at Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics wanted to pass on five tips, courtesy of the AAO, to help your pearly whites stay safe during sports activities. Remember to:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact Smiles by Farrah Orthodontics . Stay safe and have fun!

Ask Dr. Agahi: Why should I have straight teeth?

Some people wonder why Dr. Farrah Agahi works so hard to give her patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

At Smiles by Dr. Farrah Orthodontics we take great pride in helping our patients achieve a beautiful, glowing smile that they can share with confidence! Dr. Agahi and our experienced staff spend time with each patient individually in order to create a completely personalized treatment plan for the best results.

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please call us to set up a consultation. Dr. Agahi and our team can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment at Smiles by Dr. Farrah Orthodontics.
